How can handwarmers be made at home?

There are handwarmers for sale at places like walmart during the winter months that advertise being made entirely of natural compounds. They heat up to about 120F average and last for around 6 hours. How would someone go about making this at home so as to create something like a shoe insert that heats up?

You could fill a sock with rice or buckwheat, heat it in the microwave for 90 seconds or so and it should provide nice heat for one to two hours. It%26#039;s not a chemical handwarmer if that%26#039;s what you wanted, but it would work. You could react muriatic acid (available in hardware stores) with lye (some oven cleaners) and it would warm up, but I wouldn%26#039;t recommend it, as you%26#039;re dealing with HCl and NaOH, both caustic chemicals that will burn you if not careful. But when they are mixed, it is a pretty exothermic reaction, but not really nontoxic per se.
Reply:try using cayenne pepper
