they are the very active type. every second of the day, they have to be up and going (and going and going and going). Sometimes, like once a week, i just need them to sit down all at once and be quiet and watch TV. None of them can seem to do this. They hate TV. The middle aged ones like Disney Channel and all those movies and shoes (Hannah Montana, High School Musical) but the others, forget it. Is there anything I can do to get them to settle down and watch it every now and then?
and I%26#039;m sorry about repeating this question, I%26#039;m just trying to get more answers. The last time i asked this, i didn%26#039;t get very many good ones.
How can I get my kids to watch TV?
Hon tell them there is to be %26quot;quiet time%26quot; for one hour whenever and schedule it in. They can read a book, go play a video game or do a puzzle or watch tv. When I raised my nephews from 1pm-2pm they had quiet time they had to read a book or just be in their rooms by themselves doing something that wasnt overly noisy. Sometimes they watched tv sometimes they laid on the bed and slept many times they read a book or comic
By the way you dont want them watching to much TV I have a 7yr old SD and that is all she does she%26#039;s either watching TV or on the computer she wont go outside she wont do sports and she is obese as a result of her inactivity but her mom uses TV as a baby sitter and my sd says %26quot;it keeps me entertained%26quot;
*EDIT* I just read your profile 14 kids! No wonder you need quiet time. Boys seem to be more active and you have 8 of them! My son is more active at 16 months then my daughter was, my 2 nephews that I raised were more active then their sister. The older ones can understand you need quiet time and though I am not a big promoter of older kids helping to care for younger maybe if you talk w your older ones they can maybe take the younger outside so that you have a break? I wish you all the luck in the world being a single parent isnt easy but its worth it.
Reply:Why not just tell them you want some quiet time. Get them involved in a game or playing in their rooms or something. Why do they have to watch TV?
Reply:I very much appreciate wanting them to have some quiet time (for your own sanity!) but you are fortunate that your kids aren%26#039;t TV zombies.
Maybe you can just set a time every week that is designated for that -- Wednesdays between 4 and 6 p.m. or whatever -- when they can watch TV or do anything, but it has to be quiet. Instead of trying to define the activity to occupy the time, define the time and let them choose the activity that occupies it.
Reply:Once a week, have a family movie night. Go rent some movies together, and pick out snacks and popcorn. That night after dinner play a board game or another game together and then have some snuggle up on the couch time for the movie. Younger kids may like to pretend you are at the movie theater and make little tickets and pretend to sell the popcorn to people. Hopefully then you can have two hours where everyone is sitting together and relaxing and you can discuss your opinions about the movie when it is over.
Reply:If your goal is to have them in a safe place without direct supervision, then why not ask them to play quietly in their rooms. If they would rather be in your sight, then put them at the table with play-doh, modeling clay, coloring books, or puzzles. Quiet time does not have to be in front of the tv. I don%26#039;t know if anyone will give you ways to get children to watch tv, most are trying to get their children away from the tv or other electronics.
Reply:Wow, this is not a question that is asked usually people would want to know how to stop them from watching.
The only suggestion I would have is to take them to the video store and let them pick out a good movie preferably a movie that is based on some type of cartoon, or tv show, that way if they like the movie they will want to watch the tv show/cartoon more often. With the movie either get them some popcorn or pizza something that they will actually sit, that way they can get their attention to the tv since they are sitting to eat. Of course you don%26#039;t want them to get in the habit of eating and watching tv so don%26#039;t get them pizza or popcorn every time. I hope I was able to help, and good luck
Reply:Children shouldn%26#039;t watch much tv according to recent studys that say it delays development and increases ADD....amongst other things...

Reply:The younger ones look upon their elder sibblings as leaders and if you can get the bigger ones to sit down and watch tv, the rest will usually follow. Look up for a good movie and talk to them abt it. Tell them, hey why dont we have a change for a while. This movie is real interesting etc.. etc... Make pop corns, get soda, dips, snacks and make it a fun time together.
We forbid our daughter to watch tv during weekdays except on Tues when her favorite show is on for an hour. Otherwise she is restricted to watching tv only on Friday to Sunday (hours restricted). We rather she goes out to play with the neighbours kids then lost in her world of tv.
In my family, i am the one who wld hardly watch tv. It is not easy to get me to sit down and watch a movie... lol
Reply:My child is the exact same way, always wanting to go, go, go. I bought the nintendo wii game for the tv with the kung-fu/ karate game and the dance mat game... It is interactive, where my child has to get up and do karate moves and or do dance moves, depending on what game that is played. It has been keeping my child entertained for a few hours a week.
The game was costly, but worth it to me to have just a little time to myself!!!!
Reply:i think if your kids would rather be active then sit and watch tv, you are lucky. if you need them to be quiet, well send them in the yard to play or something. arrange a quiet time in the house where they can read books or color...if they dont wanna be sucked into the TV world, dont force them
Reply:You can try board games, puzzles, legos, coloring books, or other alternatives.
Try taking them to a park where you can watch them yet have some quiet time.
If not you have to find a show that intrest them.
Reply:How old are your kids? I have 3 toddlers and I understand what you mean by needing them to settle down every now and then. My kids seem to enjoy watching PBS sprout (I know it%26#039;s offered on Direct TV and some comcast customers.) They are too young to get into other channels such as Disney, Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network. Some of the %26quot;stupidest%26quot; shows grab their attention and they sit quietly and watch the episodes. WE all watch Noddy and Jakers Piggly Winks (actually a top rated kids show), but they love to also watch Angelina Ballerina, Kipper (why???)...but they will sit down and watch anything on that network. If you don%26#039;t have cable, these shows are offered in the mornings on PBS, maybe u could record them for those emergency situations when you need quiet time.
The 2 and 3 yr old watch tv w/us for a little bit at night, but that usually doesn%26#039;t last long.
Do your kids like movies? My son would insist on watching Finding NEmo, Shark Tale and the Incredibles OVER AND OVER. My second is into Barney..the 3rd is quiet, but she%26#039;s only 11 months old.
I%26#039;m sure threatening to change the channel isn%26#039;t the best parenting advice, but that works for me sometimes. They usually go sit quietly and continue watching their show.
I wish u luck.
Reply:The key would be finding something that interests all of them, unless you have more than one tv and want to split them up. You don%26#039;t say what their ages are so it%26#039;s hard to answer specifically. You could offer them a reward. Tell them if they will sit still and watch one show or one movie then you%26#039;ll take them to the park or do something they want to do. Tell them if they get up and move around or make a lot of noise they won%26#039;t get the reward. It%26#039;s pretty funny that some people offer tv as a reward and you might need to reward them for watching. Some of the PBS shows are good for kids of various ages. Mine like Curious George, Cyber Chase (yours might like this since they are active), Arthur, etc.
Reply:I think you should try to find something else that they enjoy doing. Maybe drawing or making crafts (most kids like to cut and glue stuff) or playing in a sand box where you can monitor them. Try not to encourage them to do anything competitive because it won%26#039;t be a break for you..you%26#039;ll be refereeing.
If you make a big deal about their art work %26amp; display it, they may be more interested in creating more.
Reply:There are other things they can do quietly without watching tv. Board games, reading, playing with toys etc. Maybe try those and see if it works.

What should I give for my aunt who is about to graduate college ?
She is 33 year-old. Can you suggest me of anything inexpensive yet would give her a long lasting memory ? I%26#039;m thinking of an actual gift so don%26#039;t suggest to take her out for a dinner or gift card please. She doesn%26#039;t like fancy jewelry cosmetics or fancy shoes. A gift of around $30 is affordable to me. Any suggestions ?
What should I give for my aunt who is about to graduate college ?
One idea is a very nice picture frame so she can display her graduation photo, if she%26#039;s planning on having one.
Reply:Kind of a funny, cute gift is the Dr. Seuss book, %26quot;Oh, the Places You Will Go.%26quot; It is all about the places and things to discover, and even though it is a child%26#039;s book, if you put a nice message inside, %26quot;I%26#039;m so proud of you and all your accomplishments, I%26#039;m so excited for the places you will go with your career, etc.%26quot; It would be cute!
Reply:A good book. When you%26#039;re in college you find yourself reading what others have assigned for you to read. You find yourself wanting to read for enjoyments. So either get her a novel or a gift card so she can pick one out for herself.
Reply:I think an engraved frame would be nice. You can have your picture taken with your aunt in her cap and gown and then, the photo will go inside.
The engraving could be as simple as %26quot;Happy Graduation%26quot; and the date.

Will The Following Get Me In Shape and How?
I%26#039;m an 18 yr old male, weighs 127.4 lbs and am 5 foot 6 inches. I%26#039;m considered skinny by others.
I want to get in shape, build muscle, etc....but all i have to use are the following at home.
1. Exersice Big Yoga Ball
2. 2 Dumbells
3. Running Shoes
4. Boxing Gloves and Punching Bag
5. Whey Protein Mix
6. ....and my cousin who lives a few blocks away has a bench to lift weights.
Can all this help me out? And how so?
(This is my 1st attempt to get in shape and am clueless)
How intense should my workouts be? How long should my workouts last? How long till i see results?
Will I have to change my life upsidedown?
Will The Following Get Me In Shape and How?
to build muscle you need to do weight training. when doing weight training dumbells and benching will work just fine. when working out you need to change up the routine a bit. meaning one day do heavy lifting with small reps, another day do light weight with many reps, and another day do medium weight until burnout. burnout meaning you can do another rep of the weight. you need to make sure you take in at least 130g of protein a day in which ways of the whey protein, chicken, tuna, steak, peanut butter, ect. when working out work out time should be anywhere from half hour to one and a half hours. i prefer about an hour. you need to make sure when working out you are only working out certain muscles on certain days meaning like chest and tris on day, bis and sholders another and legs another. workout no more than 3 days a week. remember that your body will repair itself on days that you dont work out so lots of rest is a must. doing it the natural way should take about 4-7 weeks to see results. ive been working out and doing research for nearly 7 years...hope that helps

I%26#039;m not saying I%26#039;m a monster or something now, but I%26#039;ve put on like 10 lbs of muscle and people tell me I look fit. You should be happy your skinny! You have a low body fat percentage, so when you build the muscle, you will look cut! And yes you must change your life upside down! You will not regret it! Freakin do it! Now! AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
As far as excersizes, start low. You will be sore as hell, but it will be good. Gradually build up. Get a book or something. Do a search on routines. !!!!!!!
Reply:Well it comes down to you...
Whey protein is excellent but only if your working it hard can you even build up the muscle. So here is what I suggest.
Start slowly by running with your 2 dumbells and pump your arms when you run. Get some music going that gets you pumped, I prefer Eminem, for some reason his words and beat is great when I run.
Each day run a little farther or get bigger dumbells. You will just feel your arms, chest and legs tightening up and guess what that is the areas that are gonna make you look BUFF.
I would keep your routine simple and not complicated or you are less likely to do it. Eat allot of chicken, meat fish and veggies for the protein you will need. Don%26#039;t over due carbs (sugars and Starches) because they in an abundant quantity will hold you back.
And most of all enjoy yourself and push it when you feel like it when your running... keep your work out enjoyable...

How to prevent running injuries?
I started running track last semester, only about 2-3 miles a day, but then i got plantar fasciitis in my feet over the summer so i stopped running for more than 2 months. schools about to start and i%26#039;m a little worried whether I can start running again. My feet feel better, but they still feel kinda strained and I don%26#039;t want this to develop into something worse. my ankles and my toes crack a lot too. I recently got 2 new pairs of shoes : ASic%26#039;s gel 1110 with super feet and nike free because thats supposed to make your feet stronger and prevent injuries. which one should i use? what kind of stretches should i do before and after running?
How to prevent running injuries?
I have plantar fasciitis too and the doctor had to make inserts for my shoes. Before running, you should do various leg stretches. I wish I knew how to describe the leg stretches, but I really can%26#039;t . One of the big ones is the butterfly and you want to do other excercises that will stretch both the inside and the outside of your legs.
Reply:I need to know too! Im starting to run every other day...

I just moved to Florida and we have TONS of sandburs in our yard. How do I get rid of them?????
I have read that pulling them up would help but I have NO idea what the weed looks like to pull it up. Our yard was obviously not very well maintained by the people who lived here last. We only rent so I am not putting the $ into having the yard redone. Is there anything I can maybe mix with a grass seed and lay grass and %26quot;it%26quot; down together?
Any help would be appriciated. We have to put shoes on to walk to the hose!!!
Thanks all!
I just moved to Florida and we have TONS of sandburs in our yard. How do I get rid of them?????
I won%26#039;t repeat the other good advice here, but we also had alot of success from hanging an old sack behind the mower and dragging it as we cut the grass. It picks up alot of the sand spurs and helps give a little relief while the sprays and mowing are doing their work. Good Luck with it:)
Reply:Allow them to begin to go to seed. It%26#039;s the females you want to target, the base of their stems are slightly purple. They grow radially out from the mother plant. When you can see the seeds, gently pull the runners up toward the center of the plant, from seed head toward stem - they break easily, and root along the ground, a preservation of species thing. When you have all the runners up and locate the main root mass, pull out. Takes time, but because of their radial growth habit you%26#039;ll find there are less to pull than you first thought.
Mowing is NoT the solution, they%26#039;re perennials and will continue to come back. Weed killer will only cause them to produce an overabundance of seeds in order to procreate the species. Pulling is the best way. I can walk barefoot in my front yard now, took 2 seasons, but it can be done.
Here%26#039;s a visual, not the greatest, but you%26#039;ll get the idea:

Reply:Pulling plants out by hand will work but is too tedious for most people. Stripping off or rototilling under heavily infested areas and replacing them with fresh sod is another way to take care of the problem. But the new sod will have to be maintained well to prevent burs from coming in again.
Reply:Most broad leaf sprays or grannuals will do the trick used a couple times a year. The burs your walking on now are last years crop..that tells you how long it%26#039;s going to take to totally get rid of them.
luck
Reply:1. in February or march out out a pre-emergence treatment, this will help keep seeds from germinating.
2. Treat with MSMA when you see sand burs coming up
3. Keep mowed short don%26#039;t let them go to seed
4. Build up your soil with good compost, sand burs like soils that are in poor condition.

What is the problem with the brakes?
I own a Maruti 800. Its done about 37000 kms. The brakes are not that great. I%26#039;m not at all cofident especially when 4 people are sitting and i%26#039;m going at speeds more than 80. I%26#039;ve taken it to many mechanics and they all say that its fine. I%26#039;ve to put my hand brakes to the last notch. And I find some black coloured oil deposits on the front right wheel of my car.
What is the cost of a new set of brake pads and shoes?
What is the problem with the brakes?
You describe a leaking brake cylinder. The oil then gets on the brake linings and reduces the friction during braking.. Friction is braking so in essence you have little or no braking on that wheel. Also depending on the leak you would not be able to build good hydraulic pressure to the other brakes if you have one leaking.
You need to get those brakes checked and repaired !!!!!!
I am not familuar with your type of car, but it can%26#039;t be all that exspensive.
Reply:You have a leak in the front brake. Take it to the shop and they will be able to fix it. Since it is leaking the brake fluid is lubricating the brake shoes and they are not grabbing, thats why your brakes arent working so good. Either the caliper, if you have disc, or brake seals are leaking in the drum.
Reply:I loved The Brakes first album but after the guitarist left things have gone down hill.
Reply:The oil deposits may be from a split CV boot on your right front wheel drive axle. If the car doesn%26#039;t stop like it did when you bought it, besides having the brakes checked as you did for wear, it%26#039;s possible that the rear brakes aren%26#039;t doing their share of the braking because the hydraulic pressure regulator to the rear brakes isn%26#039;t working right. I would have a knowledgeable technician check the rear brake line pressures.
Reply:It%26#039;s most likely hydraulic fluide not oil, and if thats the cas then your brakes are leeking wich will cose lost of pressure to the pistons pushing the brake caliber. In another case it can also be oil leeking from your lubricant hose or your engine has a small leek from the headers. I recomend you bring in your car to a certified technician in the brand of your car.
